What to Do When a Pipe Leaks

Leaking pipes usually result from worn‑out joints, corrosion or rust that weaken connections, or damage caused by impacts and pipe movement. If you see water dripping or damp spots around a visible pipe, that's a clear sign of a leak.

The safe DIY steps are to shut off the main water valve or the nearest shut‑off valve to the leaking section. If there is no local valve, turn off the main supply for the house. Then wipe the area dry and inspect the leak. For threaded connections, try tightening them with an appropriately sized wrench, and wrap plumber's tape around the threads before re‑tightening. For a small leak on an exposed pipe, a temporary pipe repair clamp or a piece of rubber and hose‑clamp can hold water until a professional arrives.

If the leak is inside a wall or floor, is large, has strong water flow, or does not stop after tightening or taping, stop any further DIY work and call a professional plumber. Working on concealed or structural piping can cause more damage or lead to ongoing water intrusion, and a qualified plumber can diagnose and fix the issue correctly and safely.
